This month I am running 120km to raise money for Movember. In 2019 a male died to suicide every 120 minutes on average in the UK, that number only rises when you add in prostate cancer and testicular cancer too.
Every year in the UK approximately 2,400 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer and 48,500 with prostate cancer. In 2019, 4303 men died from suicide, the highest since 2000. I want to raise money to help support those who are still struggling and those who have just had a life changing diagnosis.
This subject is particularly close to my heart. Although some of you may know that I work in mental health, very few of you will know that for most of my adult life, I’ve struggled with keeping my mental health in check.
For years, like many others, I did not realise that this was what was going on. Mental health isn’t something that we learnt about at school. It was only a few years ago that I became more aware of the need to talk about my mental health, and even then only seeking support when things became more serious.
I’m sharing just a small part of my story not for sympathy, but in the hope it may spur someone to seek support if they need it.
I’m raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives. I need your help. Please donate to support Men’s health.
