The weather completely wrecked this as a competitive contest. With over three hours lost to rain and its aftereffects, the game, in accordance with NPL rules, was designated a 'timed game' that largely thereafter became a pretty tedious waste of time.
Going in to bat for a minimum of 21 overs in reply to Plumtree's 200 for 6 declared, there was practically no chance of securing a win or even of adding a batting bonus point. The game eventually officially concluded as 'abandoned' after Attenborough sensibly crept to 71 for 3 from 27 overs.
Ben Kitt picked up the honours for best performance of the day with some impressive bowling in picking up 3 for 33 from 10 overs.
My personal view is that the sooner this antiquated rule is laid to rest and DLS is introduced the better. A rough calculation indicated that Attenborough's target under DLS would have been about 180 from 35 overs - which sounds like a recipe for a potentially exciting game with a definite and meaningful conclusion.
