After what seemed like an age waiting for the rain to end (perhaps we now no how Charles feels), the Squirrels returned to Premier League action with a trip to Caythorpe. Sadly there were very few happy returns from the game; just picking up full bowling points in a 102 run defeat.
Caythorpe were asked to bat first on a really difficult track and probably exceeded their own expectations by some margin in reaching 209 for 9 wickets. All of our bowlers picked up at least one wicket with Savin Perera securing 3 for 33 from his full 12 overs. Unfortunately bowling options were somewhat restricted with Ben Kitt picking up an injury whilst fielding after just 5 of his overs.
In response wickets fell regularly and the Squirrels didn't manage to put together one of those crucial partnerships that can make such a significant difference in a game. Worryingly a second, more serious, injury felled Burhan Alam whilst completing a run that resulted in him having to leave the field in considerable pain. He did manage to hobble slowly back to the crease in a desperate and spirited attempt to salvage more from the game. I wish him and Ben the speediest of recoveries.
This was a game where injuries, luck and the rub of the green all seemed to go against us; but better days surely lie ahead.
