Weekend report - 9th September incl. The Great Escape?

Only one game this weekend and it was the 1sts home to Kimberley with a simple aim... avoid relegation. Captain Chris won the toss and elected to field in a reduced 41 over game due to the rain. The 1sts started off well with conditions favouring the seamers early doors. However, opening bowlers Dominic Harvey (9-1-17-2) and Ben Bhabra (9-2-47-2) did consistently put the ball in great areas taking wickets in the process. Kimberley were restricted to 28 for 3 but there was some great batting from the middle order which resulted to a great comeback. Kimberley ended up on 231 for 5 from their allocated 41 overs.

The 1sts came out to bat and made a brilliant start. Steve Allcoat was in fine form (76 from 44 balls including 11 fours and 3 sixes) scoring quickly and laying a great platform for the middle order. He was well supported by his brother Chris (35) combining to build a great partnership of 94 but there was a collapse which dented the 1sts momentum. Steve, Tom Moores and Chris were all out within 4 runs as it turned from 122 for 1 to 126 for 4. Despite Byron Haycock's best efforts (36), the 1sts were bowled out for 209 losing by 22 runs, view full scorecard here. However... the 1sts managed to avoid relegation, view full table here! There was another game in the league which needed to go our way and it did thanks to the rain! Great effort from the lads especially in the last few games picking up crucial points. Furthermore, the 2nds maintain Division A status which is a great accomplishment.

This was the last game of the 2017 season for the Squirrels! Thanks to Pete Bhabra for providing us with the weekly reports throughout the season. I hope to see you all at the annual Presentation evening on Friday 6th October!
