Review of Junior Winter Training

We completed the 12 week winter coaching programme at Bramcote on 4 April with all age groups being well represented and around 60 players in total attending. Our coaching team has been added to during the winter with the addition of Sue Moore, a level 2 coach who has worked with Belgium national teams. Sue brings a vast amount of experience to the team who continue to operate under the direction of Jamie Hart. We have also benefited from Jamie’s Nottinghamshire County Cricket connections with Hassan Azad, Notts 2nd team player who has been a regular coaching both foundation and hard ball groups.

Foundation group

The first 6 weeks concentrated predominantly on batting and ABC (Agility, balance and coordination) skills. After the half term break we covered bowling and fielding skills. The last three weeks the players reached a level whereby they could complete all the disciplines of a game bowling, batting and fielding which is a tremendous achievement particularly for the first timers. We will continue to build on these basics during the summer programme with the target for players to be at a standard to play for one of our Kwik cricket teams. The ethos for the foundation group is to learn the basics of cricket in a fun environment.

There is a weekly award for the player who has done particularly well in the session, not always the best player, but the player who has improved or tried
particularly hard. The details of the weekly winners are on the club's junior website http://attenborough-cc-juniors.blogspot.co.uk

Hard ball groups

This year we have moved away from simple having net practice, although these have a role to play and are important for the younger players who have no hard ball experience. Each group have had an ABC skills session and we intend to continue with more of this going forward along with regular fielding drills. We have also been able to do some 1-2-1 work to overcome any problem areas and to improve players' technical skills.

Coaches update

Andy Waddle has successfully completed his level 2 qualification and Barry Humphriss is working towards his, well done gents and keep up the good work. A real plus point this winter has been Matt Shaw who has been able to do some individual wicket keeping coaching with our budding keepers and our intention is to continue this specialist training during the summer programme – well done Matt.

A big thank you to all the coaches who have made the commitment during the winter and I look forward to your continued support during the summer at training, managing junior teams or attending hard ball and Kwik cricket matches.
